FlexKRETE Mixing, Application and Product Guidelines

PRODUCT GUIDELINES: How to Mix and Apply FlexKRETE

Horizontal, Vertical, Overhead, Overlays, Slurry-Broadcast, Self-Leveling, Coating with Broadcast

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: QUICK REFERENCE AND TIPS

EXPANSION JOINTS: Retain joints by inserting a spacer board, FlexKRETE the edges, let cure for 30 minutes, then tap board end to remove.

COLOR MATCHING: For a more gray appearance, use less sand. Use more sand for tan. Adding fumed silica also creates a more gray color.

FLEXTEMP ACCELERATOR: Speeds cure time and is great for cold temperatures as low as -35° F. NEVER MIX FLEXTEMP DIRECTLY WITH FLEXKRETE CATALYST - MIX IN SEPARETLY.

PROPER MIXING: Always power-mix using a variable speed electric drill w/ a rectangle thinset mixing paddle. Motar mixers are recommended for large projects.

VEHICULAR TRAFFIC: Apply a double-broadcast.

PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC: Applying a single broadcast is typically sufficient.

INDUSTRIAL SHOP FLOORS: Depending on traffic, a single or double-broadcast can be applied.

BALCONIES & WALKWAYS: For light traffic, applying a single broadcast is typically sufficient.

EASY TROWELING: Keep stainless trowels clean by wiping with acetone frequently.

CLEANING TOOLS: Use only acetone to clean all tools and equipment.

FLEXKRETE MIXING AND APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

HORIZONTAL REPAIR

  1. CLEAN SURFACE: Cut or chip vertical lip around repair area to 1/4” depth or more. Remove dirt, debris, paint and contaminants to produce a clean, dry solid base. Mechanically clean area with blaster, scarifier, chipping hammer, grinder or wire wheel as needed. Vacuum or blow clean to remove excess dust.
  1. FLEXPRIME: Mix equal parts A & B, then apply very thin coat to prepped area using a brush, roller or sprayer (avoid puddles/ridges). Thin with up to 1-part acetone for easy application and penetration. Allow FlexPrime to become very tacky before applying FlexKRETE.
  1. FLEXKRETE: Open pail and power-mix for 60 seconds minimum w/ corded drill to disperse material.
  1. MEASURE FLEXKRETE: Measure and pour amount needed into clean mixing pail.
  1. CATALYZE: Loosen catalyst bottle lid, fill chamber with amount needed. Remove lid and pour catalyst into mixing pail, power-mix for 30 seconds.
  1. MEASURE & ADD AGGREGATE: Add 3 to 3.5 parts clean dry sand into mixing pail containing catalyzed FlexKRETE, then power-mix until well blended.
  1. APPLY MATERIAL: Pour into void, and then fill flush, pushing firmly into voids. Trowel smooth using long, smooth strokes. Sprinkle sand onto wet surface to reduce tack.

NOTE: PRIMER - A Spray Bottle may be used to apply primer.

VERTICAL and OVERHEAD REPAIR | Same as horizontal EXCEPT

  1. SPECIAL PRIMING: Allow FlexPrime to become very tacky before applying FlexKRETE. In cold temperatures, a torch can be used to heat up concrete before applying FlexPrime, allowing primer to set up quicker.

NOTE: Primer should be tacky enough to ensure the repair material achieves a     mechanical bond to repair area. On dry concrete, catalyzed FlexKRETE may be substituted for FlexPrime.

  1. VERTICAL APPLICATIONS: After measuring & catalyzing FlexKRETE, mix 2-parts blast sand & 2 to 3-parts fumed silica. 3-parts fumed silica produces a stiff, dough-like material that can be hand-placed and troweled smooth. 2-parts fumed silica and 2-parts sand produces a less-stiff material and recommended as a good starting point to evaluate ratios needed.
  1. OVERHEAD APPLICATIONS: After measuring & catalyzing FlexKRETE, mix 1-part blast sand and 2 to 3-parts fumed silica. If material is too heavy, decrease amount or eliminate sand, and use fumed silica only.

NOTE: FOR STRONG ADHESIVE - Mix 1-part catalyzed FlexKRETE with 1-part fumed silica. The more fumed silica added to the mix, the lighter the repair material will be.

OVERLAYS | Slurry-Broadcast/Self-leveling

Remove lid and pour catalyst into mixing pail, power-mix for 60 seconds.
  1. MEASURE & ADD AGGREGATE: Add 1.5 to 2-parts clean dry sand into mixing pail containing catalyzed FlexKRETE, then power-mix until well blended.
  1. APPLY MATERIAL: Pour ribbon of slurry-mix onto repair area.using a notched squeegee or gauge rake, applying the material to desired depth. Immediately broadcast with aggregate and allow to cure.

NOTE: For Self-Leveling: Leave alone, or for a fine slurry-broadcast repair,       immediately broadcast with aggregate and allow to cure.

COATING WITH BROADCAST

  1. FLEXPRIME: Mix equal parts A & B, then apply very thin coat to prepped area using a brush, roller or spray bottle. (avoid puddles/ridges). Thin w/ up to 1-part acetone for easy application and penetration. Allow FlexPrime to become very tacky before applying FlexKRETE.
  1. FLEXKRETE: Open pail & power-mix for 60 seconds minimum w/ corded drill to disperse material.
  1. MEASURE FLEXKRETE: Measure and pour amount needed into clean mixing pail.
  1. CATALYZE: Loosen lid on catalyst bottle then squeeze bottle to fill chamber w/ amount needed and pour catalyst into mixing pail, power-mix for 30–60 seconds w/ thinset mixer paddle.
  1. APPLY CATALYZED FLEXKRETE: Pour Ribbon of material onto repair area. Using a 3/8” roller or squeegee, apply the material to desired depth. Normal thickness for coating-broadcasts are 10-mil to 20-mils. This translates to 80-160 sq. ft. per gallon. depending on broadcast material and substrate condition. Back roll material and then immediately broadcast.
  1. APPLY BROADCAST: Immediately broadcast to refusal with aggregate and allow to cure. Sweep excess aggregate from surface & open to traffic.

NOTE - TOPCOAT: A final topcoat may be applied, such as FlexAspartic or FlexSealer.
